Coming to hybrid racing from the weights room

Lifters crush the sleds and then fade on the runs. How strength athletes can build a running engine without giving up the strength they already have.

If you come from lifting, the stations may feel easy. The running will not. For strong people, running is usually where the most time is lost.

Your strengths

  • Strength for the sleds, carries and lunges.
  • Grip.
  • Comfort under heavy loads.

Your likely weaknesses

  • Aerobic fitness.
  • Running economy and pace.
  • Muscular endurance over long efforts.

What to add

What to keep

Two strength sessions a week maintain most of your strength.

What to reduce

Heavy leg volume can leave you too sore to run. Reduce it to make room for running.

Injury risk

Increasing running too quickly is a common cause of injury. Build gradually, and pay attention to calves and knees. See calf and Achilles care.

Race day

Do not use your strength on the sleds to go too hard early. Your runs will pay for it. See pacing the eight runs.

Division choice

Strong lifters may find Pro suits them. See HYROX Open vs Pro.
