Fitness races

7 series

A fixed course of runs and workout stations, raced solo or in pairs. Every event in a series runs the same format, so times compare across venues.

HYROX

The original run-and-station race, and by far the biggest.

Eight 1 km runs, each followed by a workout station, in the same order at every event. Raced indoors in exhibition halls.

DEKA

Spartan's indoor race — ten zones, with short runs or none at all.

Ten functional zones on a standard course. DEKA FIT puts a 500 m run before every zone, DEKA MILE uses shorter runs totalling a mile, and DEKA STRONG has no running. ULTRA (25 km, 50 zones) and ATLAS (heavy, 30-minute cap) stretch the format further.

ATHX Games

A 2.5-hour session scoring strength, endurance and metcon in turn.

Three scored zones — Strength (20 min), Endurance (30 min) and MetCon X (30 min) — separated by warm-up, refuel and recovery zones. The workouts stay the same for a whole season, so every event is comparable, then change for the next.

Deadly Dozen

Twelve laps and twelve "Labours", raced on an athletics track.

A 400 m lap, then a Labour in the infield, twelve times. Six Labours cover a 30 m lane and six are for reps, using only bodyweight, kettlebells, dumbbells and plates. Indoor tracks use 200 m laps, and a Gym Race version runs in ordinary gyms.

LT Games

Life Time's hybrid event, where you choose your weight and your reps.

Seventeen stations mixing 1000 m, 600 m and 400 m runs and a 200 m sprint with deadlifts, overhead lifts, ergs, box jumps and wall balls. Each lift has a total to hit: go heavy for fewer reps, or light for more.

Team competitions

3 series

Squads take on workouts that change between events, and often stay secret until the day. Scored on placings, not a single finish time.

Beach venues including the UK, Portugal and Australia

Tribal Clash

Two days on the beach for mixed teams of six.

Teams of three men and three women take on six or seven events that stay secret until race weekend — carries, pulls, runs and swims — in a purpose-built beach arena. The top teams go through a tug-of-war semi-final to the final.

HYROX, station by station

What to pack →

The biggest race, in detail. A 1 km run comes before every station, in this order at every event — here is what your shoes and kit have to do at each point.

01

SkiErg

1000 m

Comes straight off the first run while your heart rate is still climbing. Shoes matter least here; a stable heel helps you drive from the legs rather than hanging on the handles.

02

Sled push

50 m

The station that decides kit. You need outsole grip and a shoe that does not fold at the forefoot. Small steps, low hips, and do not stop mid-lane on carpet.

03

Sled pull

50 m

Rope work, so hands matter more than feet. Grip socks over the palms or thin gloves save skin. Sit back, walk your hands, and keep the sled moving rather than jerking it.

04

Burpee broad jump

80 m

Cushioning shows up here on the landings, and so does a shoe that is too stiff to bend. Short jumps, consistent rhythm, and keep breathing through the chest-to-floor.

05

Row

1000 m

The recovery station if you let it be one. Loosen the laces if your feet have swollen; you have four hundred metres of walking after this to sort them out.

06

Farmers carry

200 m

Grip again. Tall posture, short quick steps, and one planned break rather than three unplanned ones. Chalk before you pick up, not after.

07

Sandbag lunges

100 m

Where socks earn their place. Tall socks stop the bag rubbing the neck and shoulder, and a shoe that bends at the forefoot makes the step-through cheaper.

08

Wall balls

100 reps

A flat, stable shoe is worth more than a soft one. Break the set before you have to, not after your hips give out, and keep the ball path the same every rep.
