Socks for hybrid racing: length, fabric and blisters

Tall socks save your neck on sandbag lunges and your shins on sled pulls. What length, fabric and fit to look for, and how to avoid race-day blisters.

Socks get little attention, but the wrong pair can cause blisters and discomfort. In hybrid racing, sock length also matters for some stations.

Length

Tall socks

  • Protect shins during the sled pull if the rope rubs.
  • Some racers find them useful on lunges where knees touch the floor, if the sock reaches high enough.
  • Popular in HYROX.

Short socks

  • Cooler.
  • Fine if you do not need the protection.

Fabric

  • Synthetic blends: wick sweat, dry quickly.
  • Merino wool: comfortable and odour resistant.
  • Cotton: holds sweat and can cause blisters. Avoid for racing.

Fit

  • Snug, without wrinkles.
  • No tight bands that dig in.
  • Sized to your foot.

Blisters

  • Keep feet dry.
  • Use well-fitting socks and shoes.
  • Consider anti-blister balm on problem areas.
  • Tape known hot spots.

Thickness

Thicker socks cushion but take up space in your shoe. Race in the thickness you train in. See shoe fit for long races.

Spare pair

Pack a spare pair for after the race. See what to pack in your HYROX race bag.
