Choosing a Doubles partner is one of the biggest decisions you make for the race. The obvious approach is to find someone as fit as possible. It is not always the best.
Running pace matters most
You run together, so the pace is set by the slower runner. A partner with a similar running pace means neither of you is held back or pushed too hard. A big gap in running ability costs more than a gap in station strength.
Complementary strengths
At the stations, you can split the work however you like. A partner who is strong where you are weak is valuable. If you are good on the SkiErg and row but weak on the sleds, a partner who is strong on the sleds is ideal.
Temperament
Hard moments happen. How your partner reacts matters. Do they stay calm? Do they encourage or criticise? Someone you get on with makes the race far more enjoyable.
Commitment
Make sure you both want the same thing from the race — a fast time, or a fun day. Mismatched goals lead to frustration.
Availability to train together
Training together helps you learn each other’s pacing and practise changeovers. A partner you can train with regularly is a big advantage. See partner sessions for Doubles.
Mixed, men’s or women’s
Doubles has men’s, women’s and mixed categories. Check the current rules for any differences in loads or qualification.
Before you commit
Do a hard training session together. You will learn a lot about how you work as a team.
